Kids’ attic hideout with hatch door access, custom toy storage, and large dormer window

The Attic

See how we designed a creative custom home—without breaking the budget.

Concept

It’s all about the kids! The client wishes to have a fun attic space in th new ADU, where their kids can hideout. Therefore, the concept is to building a floating cabin in the house as the centralized feature. Local ADU codes posed challenges for supporting this concept. Due to height and area limits, we had to get creative. Kids don’t need full-height space to play—so we designed a fun attic hideout that fits within code and maximizes every inch.

  • A new 1,200 sq ft ADU with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, designed for their parents who are moving in to help care for the kids.

  • Many architects treat ADUs as an afterthought — we don’t. We bring the same care, creativity, and attention to detail as we do to custom homes. Compact living doesn’t have to feel constrained. From airy, light-filled living spaces to playful, character-rich features, we know how to design meaningful homes within budget. For upwardly mobile clients, we encourage bold thinking—even in small footprints. In this case, we created a “treehouse within the house” as a special hideout for the kids.
